As the Golden Globes fade to black, the spotlight is shining ahead on the biggest movie award ceremony of them all – the Academy Awards! Stars will gather at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on March 2, hoping to snag one of those golden Oscars. This year, the con artist comedy American Hustle and the slavery drama 12 Years a Slave scored the biggest collection of nominations.
Hustle tied for the lead alongside Gravity, with 10 nominations including best picture, director, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, and adapted screenplay. Gravity’s impressive list includes best picture, director, and actress. In a close second is 12 Years, which scored 9 nominations including best picture, director, actor, supporting actor, and supporting actress.
What other movies besides Hustle, Gravity, and 12 Years are up for best picture, the biggest award of them all? Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Sheesh, talk about a serious and intellectual group of nominations!
Given Leonardo DiCaprio’s electric performance as the wickedly rich schemer in The Wolf of Wall Street, fans are hoping that this just might be the year that Leo finally lands an Oscar. He did take home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy recently, and this is his 4th nomination for an Academy Award. Hopefully, it’ll be his first win!
Besides the red carpet fashion styles and teary-eyed thank you speeches, we’ll be eagerly looking forward to the hilarious hosting antics of Ellen DeGeneres.
