Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao boxing match each earned record-breaking millions in the first weekend of May.
Ultron rocketed into theaters as the 2nd biggest movie opening of all time with $187.7 million. It didn’t make it past the original film from 2012, because The Avengers still holds the #1 record at $207.4 million. And the 3rd biggest opening of all time? Iron Man 3, which earned $174.1 million in 2013.
It’s not too surprising that Age of Ultron came in second place, because audiences had their attention split by the NBA Playoffs and the MayPac “Fight of the Century” in Las Vegas. There was definitely a LOT more action in Avengers than the boxing showdown, where the only thing “Money” about Floyd was the record-breaking $300 million+ that pay-per-view customers shelled out to watch him run in circles.
That doesn’t even count all of the hotel reservations, food purchases, and live ticket prices, which could add up to more money than the $500 million made by Super Bowl XLVIII. The two boxers alone earned a combined $530 million payday. That’s enough money to fix Mike Tyson’s teeth! Not bad for a day’s work. You know who doesn’t get paid enough? The Avengers. Well, unless you’re billionaire Tony Stark.
The superhero team of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye delivered a knockout punch to the trickster god Loki in the first movie. In the sequel, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner discover an artificial intelligence in Loki’s mind-controlling scepter, and they use it to finish Stark’s “Ultron” global defense project. The A.I. quickly takes out Stark’s much friendlier J.A.R.V.I.S. program and builds a massive robot army, forcing the Avengers to team up and defeat him. And people thought Apple was an evil technology giant…
Pacquiao fans would definitely agree that Mayweather was more villainous than Ultron, even with voice actor James Spader giving the character as much devious charisma as Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. The much more action-packed flick also added two new super-powered humans to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with the speedster Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and the telekinetic Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) as Scarlet Witch. What would a fight look like between Quicksilver and Mayweather? Samuel L. Jackson also returned as Nick Fury, the former leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. who knows how to deliver a one-eyed smackdown. Haven’t seen the movie? Hulk SMASH! C’mon!
Before you run off, here are some final thoughts: What would a fight look like between Quicksilver and Mayweather? I’m already getting dizzy just thinking about it. Would the $1 million Burger King mascot in Mayweather’s entourage put up a better fight? You know, the one walking alongside Justin Bieber. No really, this happened. That’s how Mayweather rolls.
