If you were moving colorful boxes from one side of your iPad screen to another, it certainly wouldn’t feel like you were learning algebra. However, with the DragonBox Algebra 12+ app, that’s exactly what you’ll be doing! This colorful and imaginative take on those dreaded algebra problems… you know, where there’s numbers and letters to deal with… will have you solving advanced concepts in no time.
Although the price of $10.99 seems hefty for an app, there’s over 350 levels, enough algebra content to challenge both middle and high school students, and everything from “distribution” to “factorization” covered. The graphics are top-notch, as are the animations, so you’ll immediately feel like you’re just playing the latest Angry Birds or Candy Crush Saga game.
The goal in each level is to get the “box” alone, which basically mirrors getting the “variable” by itself in regular algebra. By clicking and dragging “cards” from the bottom of the screen to simplify the equation, like cancelling out a negative “c” with a positive “c”, you’ll try to get the sparkling “box” alone. At the end of each level, you get rated on whether or not you got the box alone, finished it in the right number of moves, and used the right number of cards.
In addition to the 357 puzzles, the app features twenty progressive chapters that get increasingly tough, including 10 that are focused on learning and 10 that are focused on training. What’s especially awesome about this app is that there’s minimal instructions and maximum focus on experimenting, getting creative, and learning-by-doing. So, our final verdict? We give this app an “A”.
