Do you remember the heat wave that took North America by surprise in 2012? High temperatures all across the US and Canada broke 164 heat records and killed 82 people. As a winter lover, it was one of the worst summers of my life. I started sweating if I so much as breathed! I better brace myself then, because based on data from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, environmental scientists predict that the sweltering summer sun is going to burn brighter than ever in the coming years. Dim Coumou, the leader of the study, said, “We find that up until 2040, the frequency of monthly heat extremes will increase several fold.” Oh, no! I better have a towel ready to blot away the beads of sweat and drink gallons of water to keep myself hydrated!
