At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, director Joss Whedon revealed the title and villain for the highly anticipated sequel to The Avengers. Saying goodbye to Loki, The Avengers: Age of Ultron focuses on Ultron, a very self-aware robot that develops an obsession with power. With superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, flight, mind control, a coma ray, and a genius intellect, he’s going to be a hard match for the Avengers.
Whedon, however, says that Ultron isn’t going to be the angry bot he is in the comics. Instead, he’s trying to find a way to humanize the robot. “I knew right away what I wanted to do with him,” Whedon explained. “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers… he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic.”
The company has plans “to ground” Ultron while still evoking the anger within. It sounds a lot like the Hulk, huh? One angry dude who still has a heart, and just wants to be loved underneath it all. We don’t know how Whedon’s gonna pull off making a robot with emotions, but we’re definitely interested. The Avengers 2 is coming to theatres May 1, 2015. That gives Marvel studios plenty of time to give us all new exclusive details.
