Boston’s Lester outduels Detroit’s Scherzer

Pitching wizard Scherzer missed his chance to become the second pitcher ever to open a season with a 20-1 record, when BoSox Jon Lester’s lightning bolt baseballs took out the Detroit Tigers. Roger Clemens is the only MLB pitcher to start off at 20-1, ending up 20-3 with the New York Yankees in 2001. ”We’ve got two of the top teams in the American League. We’ve got great pitchers on both sides going at it. This is what’s going to happen,” said Scherzer. ”Unfortunately, I made one mistake and it cost us.” Detroit manager Jim Leyland explained, “He pitched terrific. Early on, I thought he was as sharp as he’s been all year.”
