After a week of speculation, Bradley Cooper has now officially been cast in the James Gunn film, Guardians of the Galaxy, as the furry, fan-favorite Rocket Raccoon. Guardians of the Galaxy is an upcoming superhero film based on Marvel’s intergalactic team of the same name, which features Peter Quill (a.k.a. Star-Lord) and his unlikely crew of characters that must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. In addition to Cooper, the cast includes big names such as Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana starring as Gamora, Vin Diesel as Groot, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and more.
The production will actually mark Cooper’s first big-budget movie voiceover work. As for Cooper’s character, Rocket Raccoon acts as the guardian of an area in outer space that is sealed off from the rest of the cosmos by a wall. Rocket comes from the planet Halfworld that is an abandoned colony for the mentally ill where animal companions are genetically mutated to become their caretakers.
While Marvel has yet to give us information on how the team will unite, it has set a release date of August 1, 2014. So, if you’re anxiously waiting for the 2015 release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, you now have Guardians of the Galaxy to temporarily fill the Hulk-sized gap in your heart!
