Billboard’s main man: Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars award
Bruno Mars strikes a pose to celebrate.

In an industry filled with over the top pop superstars, and terrible attempts at poetry by rappers, Bruno Mars and his soulful symphonies offer a breath of fresh air. So, it’s really no surprise that the man behind the 2013 Superbowl performance is Billboard’s Artist of the Year!

Sure, you can say people like Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke had huge years too, but getting rowdy on stage with Miley Cyrus is hardly anything to be proud of! This year, thankfully, the award focused solely on an artist’s record, singles, and ringtone sales. Phew, can you imagine how different the Billboard chart would have been if it focused on who had the craziest publicity stunt? We’d have Lady Gaga and her zany outfits to write about instead!

Anyways, Bruno’s album, Unorthodox Jukebox, gravitated to the #2 spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and has remained in the top 20 every week since its debut! To date, the CD has sold 1.8 million copies, and received out of this world praise for the singles: “Locked Out of Heaven” (six weeks at number 1), “Treasure,” and “When I Was Your Man” (Grammy nominated!). Those are some pretty impressive numbers, right?! Well, it only gets better for our doo-wopping crooner; his Moonshine Jungle world tour finished at number 23 on the Billboard Top 25 Tours list, which really put him on the map as the number one candidate for Artist of the Year!

When asked about Mars’ success in the past 14 months, his manager Brandon Creed exclaimed: “It’s been an incredible year. We definitely had goals going into this project to support the artist, his music, and performance. But we tried to do everything for a purpose, nothing gratuitous. And we’re continuing to lay and build the foundation for him to evolve musically and continue to connect with the audience.”

There’s honestly no artist out there like Mars right now. As an amazing vocalist and writer, he really hits the helpless romantic in me with songs like “When I Was Your Man,” and makes me do a complete dancing 180 with “Treasure.” Congratulations to this musical stud.
