Cardinals trip over Red Sox for controversial Game 3 win

Game 3 certainly left a bad taste in the mouths of Boston fans. With two outs in the ninth inning and the teams tied 4-4, Cardinals baserunner Allen Craig tripped over Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks on his way to score. Even though Craig was tagged out at home plate, baseball rules state that if a runner is obstructed (blocked or slowed down) by a fielder who’s not in the act of fielding a ball, he gets the next base. So, because Middlebrooks obstructed Craig ¬†after diving for a ball that got away, he was not technically fielding a ball. That call, made by umpire Jim Joyce, pushed the Cardinals into a 5-4 win over the Red Sox! St. Louis now leads the World Series, 2-1.
