David Beckham is drawing quite the crowd!

David Beckham, the former English soccer star who played for teams like Manchester United and Los Angeles Galaxy, retired from the sport in May of 2013. What you may not know, is he’s served as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund since 2005, helping the international relations organization provide support to children and mothers in struggling countries. On Thursday, Beckham visited typhoon survivors in the Philippines who lost their homes when Typhoon Haiyan struck on November 8.

38-year-old Beckham has a lot of visibility as a celebrity, not just for his good looks and athletic talent (he was the first English player to win league titles in four countries), but also because he’s been married to former Spice Girls pop star Victoria “Posh Spice” since 1999. Just like Angelina Jolie uses her fame to bring attention to troubled nations as a UN goodwill ambassador, Beckham helped raise awareness during his trip this week to Tacloban, one of the hardest-hit areas in the Philippines.

When he arrived, hundreds of survivors came from their tent shelters to crowd around him. “I was humbled to visit Tacloban,” remarked  Beckham, “and see how people are still so full of spirit despite the devastation they have suffered.” After Typhoon Haiyan killed over 6,200 people and left tens of thousands homeless, the Philippine survivors of Tacloban were gladdened by Beckham’s visit. He posed for photos, gave out some enthusiastic high-fives, and was shown artwork by several children in their tent classroom.

This was Beckham’s second trip to the Philippines, since he visited a shelter for children who grew up on the streets in Manila back in 2011. He and Victoria have even donated fancy designer clothes to raise money for the typhoon victims. So, it’s no surprise that after they hit New York Fashion Week with their four children for Victoria’s 2014 fashion collection at Café Rouge, the celeb power couple set their sights on the less fortunate in the Philippines.
