From Broadway to an American TV set

Les Mis movie
Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean and Russel Crowe as Javert in the movie adaptation of Les Mis.

Rob Thomas is bringing Victor Hugo’s European Classic, Les Misérables, to Fox network as a present-day soap! The primetime show will focus on a brilliant lawyer that runs a legal program that helps convicts who have been accused of a crime, and later proven innocent.

However, that’s not the only thing this brilliant lawyer has to do! He must also navigate high society, continue his mission of saving innocent people, manage his family and romantic life, and stay one step ahead of a ruthless US attorney who refuses to let the ghosts of his criminal past die. Phew!

If you’ve never read Les Mis or seen the Broadway musical adaptation, then you’ll be perfectly fine with catching this show once you know the basics of these two characters. The original production focuses on Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who changes his name to Monsieur Madeleine in order to remain hidden. Despite his criminal past, which involved minor theft, he feels remorse for his mistakes and devotes his life to helping others. However, an obsessive guard by the name of Javert is focused on proving Monsieur Madeleine is not who he says he is in order to send him back to jail.

It’s safe to assume that the show’s brilliant lawyer is a modern take on Jean Valjean, while the US attorney represents Javert. Now, there’s no word on a release date, or whether the modern-day Javert and Jean Valjean will sing to each other in court, but that seems unlikely. Now, as far as book adaptations go, Les Misérables is number one on my list of favorites, and this Fox adaptation sounds right up my alley.
