High-tech lenses and super blankets

The ONR is constantly working on a variety of important military technology that makes the difficult lives of US troops much easier.

Military technology is usually very advanced stuff, especially in the US where there’s tons of money available for research.  While the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is often coming up with crazy fast robots, there’s another organization with very cool tech – the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Besides working on futuristic lasers and ultra-safe body armor, the ONR has some rather unique inventions they recently revealed at the Modern Day Marine event.

Take the latest vision enhancing lenses for example. The incredible Fast-Tint Protective Eyewear shields a Marine’s eyes from bullets, shifts to blue or yellow in low lighting, and dark gray in the daytime. All of this… with just single lenses that can be fitted to glasses or goggles. In less than half a second, the liquid crystals inside each lens get charged by electricity to shift into other colors!

So, suppose it’s nighttime and the Marines are a bit too sleepy to keep their eyes open behind those fancy lenses? Well, the Naval Research Laboratory has developed power-generating blankets that drink up the sunlight for energy.
