If you listen closely, you can hear the high-pitched squealing of a million and one Potterheads slowly discovering that Harry Potter is coming back! On Thursday, J.K. Rowling announced that she’s joining forces with Warner Bros. and writing the screenplay for her first movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts’, realized by another writer was difficult.” Rowling posted on her official Facebook page. “Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favorite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.”
Rowling also dropped some unexpected news by saying the films would not take place in the United Kingdom! Instead, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (which is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world) will follow Newt Scamander in New York City seventy years before Harry and his friends go on their adventure. The only piece of information Warner Bros. forgot to mention is how many movies the spin off will have.
Wow! Where do I even start with this announcement? Well, aside from the fact that my heart still hasn’t stopped beating rapidly and my mom’s complaining about my screaming… I guess you could say I’m pretty excited.
