Talk about combining the best talent in comedy and music! DreamWorks Animation’s star-studded cast for the alien-invasion flick, Home, just keeps getting brighter. Now, Latina pop diva Jennifer Lopez and banjo-strumming funnyman Steve Martin are signed on for the animated movie, alongside R&B icon Rihanna and The Big Bang Theory’s snarky Jim Parsons (who plays the antisocial genius Sheldon Cooper). The film is based on the children’s book The True Meaning of Smekday, by Adam Rex. In Rex’s story, 11-year-old Gratuity Tucci is a girl who must survive on her own once her mother’s abducted (taken) by aliens called the Boov. Once the invaders arrive on Earth, they rename the planet Smekland, after their leader Captain Smek. Because they arrived on Christmas, the holiday is renamed to Smekday.
In an event called “Moving Day,” the aliens force all humans to move to Florida, but Tucci decides to drive instead of letting the Boov transport her. When the Boov find out they love oranges, all the humans are sent to Arizona instead. As Tucci travels across the United States with her Boov friend, they run into all kinds of trouble! Now, it’s not clear how closely the film will follow the novel, but Rihanna will voice a girl who avoids capture and becomes close with a banished Boov, whose character will be brought to life by the geek-speak master, Parsons. Martin will lend his witty word delivery to Captain Smek, leader of the overly confident Boov, and Jennifer Lopez will voice the mother of Rihanna’s character.
