Miracle water untouched for a billion years

After digging about one-and-a-half miles underground in a Canadian mine in Ontario, scientists believe they have found the oldest free-flowing source of untouched water ever known. Ever.

It has remained untouched, they believe, for 1 billion years. Considering that the planet Earth itself is about 4.5 billion years old and humans have only been around for 200,000 years, that’s a very long time. Heck, even the whole universe itself is only about 14 billion years old.

Mars water
Mars once had surface water, and this latest discovery may shed light on the secrets of the Red Planet.

Before this discovery, the oldest source of water that we had ever discovered was only tens of millions of years old. So, finding this BILLION-year old water is a huge deal! Imagine if the oldest person you ever met was 5 years old, and then you met a 100-year-old man. The difference is big.

Since this water contains ingredients for life, researchers are looking very carefully at samples of it to see if there are clues to things like curing diseases and the mysteries of our very own bodies – which are 75 to 80% water. It could also give clues about the planet Mars, because Mars once had surface water and could have similar untouched water hidden deep beneath the surface.

Amazing how much undiscovered stuff can be found barely one-and-a-half miles below the Earth, isn’t it?
