Paul Walker, the actor most known for his role as cop-turned-outlaw Brian O’Conner in the Fast and Furious series, has lost his life in a car crash. In Valencia, California this past Saturday, Walker was attending a charity gathering for his disaster relief organization, Reach Out Worldwide. As the event came to a close, Walker went out for a ride as a passenger in his friend’s 2005 red Porsche Carrera GT.
Around 3:30pm, on the usually peaceful Hercules Street, the vehicle crashed in a fiery blaze. Trees surrounding the crash site were charred by the flames, a lamp post fell, and looping tire tracks were visible on the street. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the accident, but the Porsche (which sells for $450,000 when new) is apparently known for its difficult handling. Even professional drivers have described it as a “scary” car to drive.
Jim Torp, a witness who saw Walker get in the vehicle with a man named Roger Rodas, said he knew in his heart that his friends had passed away after hearing a loud boom. Torp spoke at the crash site on Sunday to fans and the media, saying, “They just didn’t want to believe this happened. It was ‘Fast and the Furious,’ that’s what it is. Both racecar enthusiasts, both loved speed, both knew how to handle cars and this had to happen.”
