[App Review] Facebook Paper

FB Paper
The interface is clean and the swiping is smooth.

People like to say that Facebook is yesterday’s news, but the company constantly reinvents itself, and the Facebook Paper app is no exception. It reimagines the Facebook News Feed with larger pictures and Twitter-like simplicity in its design, as well as access to regular news.

While it started out as a way to make Facebook look cleaner on a smartphone, Paper soon became a project of its own, combining news from your friends and the world at large into one place. Vertical and horizontal swiping is the name of the game, with a slick interface that’s ultra-responsive to your fingers. You can quickly navigate through customizable news categories, zipping around entertainment, sports, and headline news on the fly.

Even though dedicated news apps like Flipboard are better at bringing together the latest breaking stories in one place, Facebook Paper takes advantage of the fact that people often get their news from links or status updates shared by friends. If you’re an Android or iPad user, don’t hold your breath just yet for a non-iPhone version, because the small team working on Facebook Paper is just testing things out right now on Apple’s smartphone. If it really takes off, though, I have to imagine Facebook will make the time to create other versions of the app.

In the meanwhile, though, I highly recommend that iPhone users pick up Facebook’s latest effort to remain relevant. What a great 10th anniversary gift to the social media world! Our final verdict? We give this app a solid “B+”.
