Serena Williams, who seemed to crush so many of her US Open opponents with effortless grace, finally met her match in Victoria Azarenka. During the intense game, Williams said, “I can’t play in this wind” and even hurled her racket angrily towards the sideline. However, she came out on top with a score of 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-1 on Sunday for a 5th championship at Flushing Meadows and her second in a row. She collected a $3.6 million prize, plus a $1 million bonus for having the best results in the North American hard-court circuit that led up to the US Open.
