Director Roland Emmerich, who co-created the sci-fi flick Stargate with producer Dean Devlin, says he wants to remake Stargate as a film trilogy! So far, the film has been made into comic books, three different TV shows, videogames, and even a cartoon. However, the Stargate universe has never seemed destined to return to the big screen until now! “We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot… and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts,” Emmerich told the website, Digital Spy, in an interview. “Pretty soon, we’ll have to look for a writer and start.”
In the original 1994 production of Stargate, an archaeologist named Catherine Langford discovers an ancient Egyptian stone is actually a wormhole, or a “Stargate,” that enables instant transportation between Earth and far-away galaxies. With the help of the US government and Special Forces Colonel Jack O’Neill, a team of scientists travel through the Stargate and find themselves stuck inside a pyramid in the middle of the desert. The team then discovers that they cannot return home without the necessary coordinates to activate the Stargate again. Now, if that isn’t scary enough, they also have to deal with an entire civilization of “things” they aren’t sure are human!
When Emmerich was asked about whether any of the original actors would appear in the reboot, he gave a straightforward answer. “The actors look totally different,” Emmerich said. “It would not work.” 20 years is definitely a long time! It’s hard to even imagine what I would look like 20 years from now, let alone how much I would have changed…
So, while a reboot of Stargate isn’t confirmed just yet, you can still enjoy Emmerich’s works by catching his sequel to Independence Day! The alien invasion thriller broke box office records nearly 20 years ago, and will make its theatrical return on July 3, 2015!
