Filmmaker Alex Gibney began production of a movie called The Road Back in 2009, documenting the life of the famous cyclist and cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong. It began as a fairly normal movie about Armstrong’s plans to make a comeback after retirement at the Tour de France, the most famous bicycle race. However, it soon turned into a tale of lies and cheating, as Lance Armstrong confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). Now, the trailer of the renamed flick, The Armstrong Lie, has been released!
Who else is starring in the documentary-turned-dramafest story? Gibney himself! Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker who’d spent hours interviewing Armstrong and being lied to, said, “The reason I put myself in the film is because I realized at some point that I had been a cog in a great PR machine. I was part of a con. I had to go back and reexamine my own role. And that, I think, makes this film different from some of the stuff I had done before.”
Six weeks before Armstrong publicly confessed on the Oprah Winfrey show, Gibney got a phone call from the cyclist. “He apologized to me for having lied to me. And we began to discuss him sitting down to make things right. This film is the result of that conversation.”
