If you’re a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and you love what Peter Jackson has done with all things Elvish, Smaug, and Oakenshield, then get ready for the concluding chapter in the Bilbo Baggins’ movie trilogy. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has descended like a fire-breathing dragon on the internet with its first teaser trailer, and the epicness is seriously mind-blowing.
On December 11, the sequel to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters, and if Smaug’s nearly $1 billion pile of gold is anything to go by, it’s going to make a splash. You know… the kind of splash that an angry dragon is going to make in Lake-town after having the Arkenstone stolen from the Lonely Mountain. If the third flick manages to cross the $1 billion mark as well as the previous two, it will be the first time ever that a trilogy of films has done so with each of its entries. I can already see Smaug’s greedy eyes getting excited for all that shiny money.
The teaser trailer, which uses the haunting ballad from Return of the King as background music, shows some stunning shots of Smaug unleashing fiery destruction from the skies, Orc legions thundering down the mountain, and Thorin Oakenshield’s band of dwarves readying their blades for war. After revealing the Middle-Earth goods at San Diego Comic-Con this past week, Jackson was nice enough to let the rest of us enjoy a glimpse of the world-ending battles to come. When Thorin asks Bilbo, “Will you follow me one last time?” in the dramatic teaser, I felt like shouting an enthusiastic “Yes!” We’ll definitely be following this film as Jackson reveals the mystery little by little, with all the smiling mischief of Gandalf the Grey.
