Hobbit gold
There’s something swimming beneath all that gold… and it likes to breathe fire…

The December 2 release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is almost upon us, and Peter Jackson’s flick is certainly looking spectacular.

After the success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jackson has now been raking in the dough with his The Hobbit trilogy, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel novel to The Lord of the Rings series. It’s definitely a bit of a stretch (literally) dragging out a single novel into three epic full-length films, but who can turn down more Middle-earth fantasy goodness? After all, The Hobbit was written before The Lord of the Rings, so it’s definitely beloved by avid Tolkien readers.

The first of the prequel films, An Unexpected Journey, cost between $200-315 million to make, but it’s already earned over $1 billion in profits!

So, it’s safe to say that Jackson has the full support of both the movie studios and elvish-speaking Tolkienites for his cinematic prequel-fest.

While fans found An Unexpected Journey somewhat lacking in the charm department, considering the weird albino baddie and the absence of Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli, Gandalf’s Ian McKellen was still in top form and Thorin Oakenshield rumbled with awesome strength.

Now, the storyline continues in The Desolation of Smaug, with the twelve companions, Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and Thorin Oakenshield traveling to the edge of the forest of Mirkwood. The journey is filled with dangers, like giant spiders and Wood-elves, as the group quests for the Lonely Mountain. There, the dragon Smaug awaits, guarding a hoard of riches! Behold the latest trailer below, and get even more excited for December.
