Look, it’s a bird…no, it’s a plane… actually, it’s an entirely different franchise! Let’s ignore Superman’s red cape and signature curly hair to focus on the web-slinging bro in tights. A month ago, Sony teased fans by saying they intended to expand the Spider-Man universe way beyond Peter Parker and Mary Jane.
According to a press release from Sony, the two spinoffs will focus on some of Spider-Man’s most famous villains: Venom and the dangerous posse, the Sinister Six!
Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures said, “The Spider-Man film franchise is one of our studio’s greatest assets. We are thrilled with the creative team we have assembled to delve more deeply into the world that Marc, Avi, and Matt have begun to explore in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We believe that Marc, Alex, and Drew have uniquely exciting visions for how to expand the ‘Spider-Man’ universe in each of these upcoming films.”
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, co-writers of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Jeff Pinker, will have the task of creating the script for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, and co-writing Venom’s flick with Ed Solomon. Kurtzman, Orci, and Pinkner are also at work on the script for The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
The studio says it hopes Marc Webb, who directed the first two Amazing Spider-Man films, will return and take a seat in the director’s chair.
Now, is it too unrealistic for me to hope that Marvel’s willing to make a standalone Loki movie?
