Forbes, the major American business magazine, recently released its list of the top 100 most powerful celebrities. Rather than just focusing on how much money they earn, Forbes weighed their influence over public opinion, their ability to change the entertainment industry, and how successful they are at being the best in their field.
Coming in at number one is the popular singer and wife of Jay Z, Beyoncé Knowles. It’s only proper that she’s at the top, considering her song “Run The World” was a major chart-topper about girl power! As for the more specific reasons, Forbes’ Los Angeles Bureau Chief Dorothy Pomerantz explained, “Beyoncé was so far ahead of anybody from the first time we looked at numbers. Not only did she earn a ton of money, but she’s taken her fame to the next level and become incredibly influential with her understanding of her fans and great use of Facebook and Instagram.”
Next was the NBA’s top basketball player, LeBron James, and in 3rd place is Dr. Dre, whose music industry business dealings earned him a whopping $620 million last year. Recently, Dre managed to nab $3 billion from Apple, when he sold his headphones and electronics company, Beats by Dre. In 4th place is TV show personality and magazine owner Oprah Winfrey, who fell from her 1st place spot in 2013. For the number 5 slot, talk show comedian and recent Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres was recognized for her popularity, charity work, and personal wealth.
Coming in at 6 was Beyoncé’s hubby, Jay Z, while boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. ducked and jabbed into 7th place. Singers Rihanna and Katy Perry lined up in 8th and 9th place, respectively, while Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes star Robert Downey Jr. locked in number 10. Other celebs who topped the charts were actor Tom Cruise, soccer star David Beckham, actress Jennifer Lawrence, and pop icon Lady Gaga.
