Parents and teachers tell you it’s good to share with others, but did you know it’s probably part of the reason you’re alive? It’s true! Based on a study from Michigan State University, being selfish is not so good for you. “We found evolution will punish you if you’re selfish and mean,” said Christoph Adami, MSU professor of microbiology and molecular genetics.
How did they figure this out? There is an awesome computer program that can can make thousands of different decisions at once, almost like a virtual world. When they made the imaginary people in the world interact together, they found cooperating helped them survive better than working alone! The selfish people were able to survive at first, but over time they either died off or began to work with a team to survive.
The Michigan professor says this computer world is not too different from the world our ancestors lived in millions of years ago. Their teamwork allowed them to survive longer. If they had died, you and I probably wouldn’t exist today!
